Overview

We are seeking an exceptional Head of Quantitative Trading to lead the short-term trading and optimisation of a rapidly growing third-party Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) portfolio. Our client operates an independent power trading floor, dedicated to optimising and trading grid-scale battery storage assets. Trading and optimisation are at the heart of their operations, not a secondary function. This is a senior leadership role, offering a unique opportunity to shape the future of energy trading.

Responsibilities

• Lead Trading and Optimisation : Take ownership of the short-term trading and optimisation strategies for a growing third-party BESS portfolio.
• Develop Trading Strategies : Design and implement strategies to dispatch batteries across day-ahead, intraday continuous, and balancing markets.
• Drive Optimiser Development : Oversee the advancement of the in-house optimiser, from model design to production deployment.
• Deliver P&L Results : Be accountable for the profitability delivered to asset owners and the company’s retained share.
• Strategic Market Decisions : Determine where the company should trade directly versus leveraging partners or third-party dispatch mandates, based on market dynamics.

Qualifications

• Proven P&L Track Record : Demonstrated success managing a power trading book, ideally in short-term markets and with experience in battery or flexible assets.
• Technical Expertise : Hands-on experience building trading optimisers or algorithms, with proficiency in Python or equivalent programming languages. Familiarity with production code and deployment pipelines is essential.
• Market Depth : Strong understanding of day-ahead and intraday spreads, fundamental modelling, stochastic price paths, and shape valuation.
• Multi-Market Exposure : Experience trading across at least two European price zones.
• Leadership Skills : Proven ability to lead teams or a strong readiness to step into a leadership role.
