Master Thesis in Quantum-Assisted Optimization

The Fraunhofer institute for Cognitive Systems IKS is specialized on applied research in the innovative areas of artificial intelligence, cognitive systems and intelligent software architectures for autonomous systems. What you will do

Quantum computing is an emerging technology with potentially significant impacts on numerous industrial sectors. At Fraunhofer IKS, we engage in a variety of projects aimed at developing robust and reliable applications of quantum computing ( link ). Our expertise comprises various aspects of quantum computing, from quantum chemistry and optimization to machine learning (ML).

With our activities in quantum-assisted optimization, we are exploring which methods are suitable under which conditions to solve combinatorial optimization problems better than purely classical methods. Possible topics for a master's thesis include, for example, distinguishing between hard and easy problem instances based on their graph structure, efficiently solving problems in HOBO ("higher order binary optimization") formulations, or exploring Grover-inspired algorithms and Quantum Imaginary Time Evolution.

What you bring to the table

• Experience with Python programming
• Experience in programming quantum algorithms with Qiskit, Pennylane, or similar
• Prior knowledge of Linux OS and Git is advantageous
• Particularly suitable for M.Sc. QST, M.Sc. Computer Science, M.Sc. Physics, or similar courses.
